Why Are References So Important?
There are No Guarantees
We don’t live in any of the homes or communities we bring families to and we always tell families to go with their gut. If it feels right, it probably is. Still, there are no guarantees. During a recent tour, one of the home’s current families met up with the “new” family in the driveway. They gave them all the inside information about how happy they were, how the home worked and how difficult the transition was for their mom. Later, our family shared with me how incredibly happy they were to have this encounter. They loved the home but felt so much better about their decision to move their dad there with this fist hand account.
Ask to Speak with a Current or Past Family
We never make decisions for families. We pre-tour and research but nothing beats that insider information. Did you know that you can ask to speak with current or past residents? Some places will present thank you cards they’ve received or testimonies when you tour. Either way, that little bit of insider information can help you make a final decision.
We try to bring you excellent options and sometimes that can make the decision easier or harder. While it’s true, there are no guarantees, asking a few questions of a current or past resident’s family can help you decide! Here are some questions to ask.
How was the move-in process?
How long did it take your loved one to adjust?
What’s the communication been like with the provider/administrator?
How’s the food?
What kind of activities are there?
